Though the name means ‘river of the sea’, Rio del Mar located in the Santa Cruz County bears no such water body (the name was just to attract some real estate in the early years). But there is a large creek here, the Aptos Creek that passes through Rio del Mar and empties into the Monterey Bay. It is a short walk from the cement ship and the ship S.S Palo Alto is today an entertainment boat, adjo ining a fishing pier. Rio del Mar is also natively popular as the Rio del Mar Flats and the adjoining areas are a fusion of great tourist destinations, upscale residences as well as summer rentals. In fact, many of the homes here are of the beachcomber types which are two-storied houses with balconies and carports. So, it is certainly quite pleasant to spend the vacations here in Rio del Mar.
